Installation Process
This section will show you the process of the lanterns and the fabric pieces.
I used 1/16th inch thick plywood to make my lanterns
To laser cut them, we had to do some math and determine how much each panel we need to cut to place them into each other when putting them together.
I created the design on illustrator, inspired my Pakistan’s cultural design patterns
Physical mockup of the design
Then I started laying it our and cutting pieces of woods to attach it to each panel and then each panel would attach it to that piece of wood, to make it more sturdier.
After putting my design in, laser cutter would cut it nicely.
Which light bulb I should use?
This question was very important for my lanterns because to project the shapes within my lanterns, it was all dependent on what kind of light source I should use.
Upon doing a lot of research, I found a perfect G40 1W bulb. Because of the nature of my material of this medium, I couldn’t use high voltage and LED wouldn’t give my lanterns the same amount of light I needed.
To design my fabric, I first figured out which fabric i want the design to be on.
I wanted to use velvet, because in Pakistani households we use this fabric a lot for multiple household items such as rugs, curtains etc.
With the help of cricut, I cut out my typography on press on heat vinyl and pressed it on the velvet.
